I have two very distinct memories from when I was young that both took place on my grandpa’s back deck in our small hometown in Michigan. The first was as follows: There was a cup of half-finished coffee, long since cooled and forgotten, sitting on the table on the back deck. I was eating a sucker. I had never tasted coffee, but knew that adults really liked it. I decided I should try it, so I dipped my sucker in the cup and licked the coffee drippings off of it. I almost barfed, it was so disgusting! I didn’t try coffee again for over 10 years.
The second memory I have is sitting on my grandpa’s lap during a thunderstorm out on the back deck, watching the lightning and listening to the thunder.
The two memories together now make up my current story. In Armenia, I love having a place outside to go to sit and drink my morning coffee (which I now quite enjoy). And I love having a place to watch the weather do what weather does best–change. That place is my balcony, from the fourth floor of my four-story apartment.
I love the view from my balcony. I think I’ve mentioned that before. The electricity problems, leaking ceiling, mold, drafty windows and all the rest don’t matter when I sit out on my balcony, admiring the view. I know I’ve also shared pictures of my view before, but here are a few more. I love that it’s constantly changing. And I know I’m going to miss it when I leave.
Some day I’ll show more of the snowy “from my balcony” pictures. I just can’t bear to do it now; I was looking through my winter photo albums and realized that I’m still a little scarred. I’d rather focus on summer right now!
Do you have a favorite place to sit and watch the weather?
