I awoke early and went looking for duct tape. The wheel on my luggage is falling off and I can’t roll it anymore, which makes it hard, because I have to lug around my big green hiking backpack and carry my roller bag, and have my laptop backpack on my back and carry my mandolin all at once. That’s a lot of weight to be lugging everywhere!!!
All the stores I found near the hotel were either closed or didn’t sell duct tape, so I almost admitted defeat. But a good Peace Corps volunteer doesn’t give up easily. Someone told me that the front desk actually has a roll, so I borrowed it and used the remainder of their tape to put a couple wraps around my luggage. It held, and my luggage now was rolling like a champ!
By 8:45 a.m. the hotel lobby was packed with all of us PCTs (Peace Corps Trainees) and our luggage.
I have volunteered to be a group leader, so I had to make sure everyone in my assigned group showed up and contributed to the tip we were going to leave for the bell boys and the bus drivers. (Peace Corps uses this hotel a lot, and wants to make sure we remain on good terms with them. Also, the staff was very helpful to us during our stay.)
The three hour bus ride to the JFK airport in New York was uneventful, but bears mentioning, because it was the next leg of our trip.
Same goes for the almost 8 hour flight to Vienna, Austria. We were served two meals and did our best to sleep sitting up without crinking our necks too bad.
